The Ultimate Guide to Grand Haven: 50 Things to do on a Staycation
18. Fly a Kite along Lake Michigan
One thing that never seems to be lacking along the waters of Lake Michigan is wind! The summer breeze keeps our bordering towns cooler than those that lay further inland, and in the winter comes with it the lake effect snow! Before we think about another polar vortex, we’d like to introduce you to the art of kite flying. It’s an activity the whole family can enjoy, and in May the Grand Haven State Park hosts the annual Great Lakes Kite Festival. These are no run of the mill kites; in fact there are huge performances that take place with the showing of kites as large as school busses! Kite enthusiast or not, the festival is sure to excite the kid at heart.
Forgot your kite? Luckily Grand Haven is home to MacKite located downtown on Washington Ave. The store not only sells toys, games, puzzles, clothing and more but includes a wide selection of single line, stunt/sport kites and accessories with experts on staff to help you choose. Kite or not the store is worth a visit and the festival is just another reason to enjoy our beautiful beaches. So grab a kite and hit the lakeshore for some wholesome family fun!
