Frigid temperatures and blizzard like conditions left many West Michigan schools and businesses closed for up to three days last week. That very same same blizzard even caught the eye of Discovery Channel’s – Storm Chasers. These guys are usually chasing tornadoes in warmer states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. But this week they made the road trip home to our backyard – Grand Haven, Michigan
Storm Chasers is a Discovery Channel TV series that follows several teams of storm chasers as they attempt to intercept tornadoes in “Tornado Alley” in the Midwest. Reed and Chris are among the TV show’s most popular chasers and they were born and raised right here in West Michigan!
Reed Timmer is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan and became interested in extreme weather at a very young age. Reed photographed his first tornado in October 1998, and was addicted to extreme storm chasing ever since. Every spring and summer season, he travels from the Mexican Border to Canada striving to photograph tornadoes from extreme close range (within 1/8 mile), often driving more than 40,000 miles during the spring and summer.
Always at Reed’s side is his best bud Chris Chittick who grew up in Greenville, Michigan and has always had an immense interest in extreme weather for as long as he can remember. Chris intercepted his first tornado in eastern Wyoming in May 2000, and has been hooked on storm chasing ever since, driving 50,000+ miles every year striving to document as many tornadoes as possible.
